Excel compatibility
xplo compiles Excel formulas to native code for fast, deterministic execution. Below is a comprehensive breakdown of every Excel function and feature, with current support status. Canonical Microsoft list synced 4/23/2026.
Of the 493 supported functions, 509 are exercised in our validation corpus today. 341 match Excel byte-for-byte across every attributed cell. 23 have at least one cell that differs from Excel above the 0.1% threshold. Each row below carries a one-sentence accuracy summary — click any row to see the per-cell breakdown.
How accuracy is measured: Accuracy is the share of unique corpus cells where our engine matches Excel (per-cell, worst-of-all-validation-records). It is measured on cells where this function is the only function in the formula when at least 20 such cells exist; otherwise it includes composed formulas and the row is badged “(includes composed formulas).” Max abs/rel error is always isolated to sole cells. Relative error is reported as 0 when the expected value is ≈0 (|expected|≤1e-9); for those cells the absolute histogram is authoritative.

Functions With Caveats
These functions compile and run, but their behavior diverges from Excel's live-recompute semantics in ways worth knowing about before you rely on them.
Volatile functions
Volatile functions change their output between evaluations in Excel — they read the live clock or draw from a random source. xplo handles them differently in each of its three execution modes:
• Deterministic mode (the default for testing) freezes every volatile call to the value Excel last saved in the workbook, so a single workbook always produces the same result no matter when it runs.
• Reproducible mode replaces the live source with a deterministic substitute — RAND/RANDBETWEEN/RANDARRAY draw from a seeded PRNG keyed on the run, NOW/TODAY use a caller-supplied timestamp — so identical seeds and inputs always produce identical outputs.
• Non-deterministic mode behaves like Excel itself: each evaluation reads the live system clock and an unseeded random source, so successive runs of the same workbook can disagree.
Workbook Features With Caveats
These are workbook-level capabilities — not tied to any single function. They work in common cases, with the limitations noted below.
Circular references
Cycles are detected via strongly connected components; cells inside a cycle use baseline passthrough on perturbation (cannot recompute).
Conditional formatting
Conditional formatting rules are preserved in the workbook but the formulas they depend on are not extracted; IF statements conditioned on conditional formats are not evaluated.
External data connections
Queries against external databases/REST sources are not executed; cached values are preserved.
Pivot tables
Pivot tables are not recomputed; GETPIVOTDATA emits the xlsx cached value.
Why Some Functions Aren't Supported
Images & Live AI
IMAGE references don't have a meaningful scalar value to fall back on, and COPILOT produces non-deterministic AI output that isn't safe to cache across runs. These are refused at compile time so their use surfaces early. Other network-dependent functions (TRANSLATE, WEBSERVICE, STOCKHISTORY, SQL.REQUEST, DETECTLANGUAGE, EUROCONVERT) use the cached workbook value instead — see Partial Support.
OLAP / Cube Functions
Functions that query external OLAP cubes (SQL Server Analysis Services and similar) compile into your workbook but always return #N/A since we can't maintain a live cube connection. Wrapping them in IFERROR/IFNA works correctly — the error is visible and catchable at runtime.
Grouping & Pivot Functions
GROUPBY and PIVOTBY produce dynamic spill arrays backed by a full SQL-style GROUP BY engine with multi-column hierarchy, totals, and sort modes. That infrastructure isn't implemented yet. Pivot tables themselves are supported: GETPIVOTDATA emits the cached pivot value from your xlsx.
System & Meta Functions
INFO, CALL, REGISTER.ID and friends query Excel's runtime environment — installed add-ins, DLL registrations, the running version's configuration — none of which exist in a compiled artifact. They refuse at compile time so their use is obvious.
Platform-Specific Functions
Functions tied to a specific platform (Windows-only FILTERXML) or locale (Japanese-only PHONETIC) return #N/A in our runtime. Excel itself gives different answers on different platforms, so this mirrors the expected behavior for users running outside the supported environment.
Real-Time Data
RTD requires a live COM server that publishes streaming values (e.g., stock tickers). Compiled artifacts have no COM runtime, so RTD is recognized but always returns #N/A — catch it with IFNA if you want a placeholder value.
Excel Qualities
Beyond per-function support, our corpus tracks Excel properties that cut across many functions — how Excel coerces types, how volatile and dynamic-array semantics behave, how circular references resolve, and more. Of 16 qualities tracked, 0 have at least one validated workbook (0 cases tagged so far).
Semantics5 qualityies
Implicit conversions between numbers, text, booleans, and errors as Excel applies them inside formulas — e.g. "3"+2, TRUE*5, comparing dates with text, and propagating #N/A through arithmetic.
NOW, TODAY, RAND, RANDBETWEEN, RANDARRAY, OFFSET, INDIRECT, INFO, CELL — functions whose output is not a pure function of inputs. Coverage exercises Explo's deterministic, reproducible, and non-deterministic execution modes.
Excel intentionally treats 1900 as a leap year for Lotus-1-2-3 compatibility. Coverage ensures Explo's date arithmetic reproduces the off-by-one for dates on or before 1900-03-01.
Behaviors that diverge across Excel for Windows, Mac, and Web — locale-bound parsing, rendering of certain glyphs, and platform-specific functions like PHONETIC.
Workbooks using the 1904 date base instead of the default 1900 base. Coverage ensures dates render and compute correctly under both systems.

Spilling output from SEQUENCE / UNIQUE / SORT / FILTER / dynamic LET, including how spill ranges interact with downstream formulas, dependency tracking, and #SPILL! errors.
Cycles in the dependency graph. Explo detects them via strongly connected components and emits the workbook's saved baseline value for cells inside a cycle (no iterative-calc convergence yet).
Pre-dynamic-array @ semantics — using a multi-cell range where a single value is expected, including legacy formulas that relied on the row/column intersection rule.
Ctrl+Shift+Enter array formulas — the pre-dynamic-array way of producing array results, still authoritative in workbooks authored before Microsoft 365.
